Code Brew Grand Re-Opening Dedication

By News

The Code Brew Grand Re-Opening is dedicated to Brenda Rositano 1964-2019.

Brenda came to work for the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation on June 12, 2000. In her role as the first Manager of our new cafe, Brenda opened up Code Brew and set it up for great success.

Brenda’s exceptional work expanded into fundraising for the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation in 2004 and she stayed with us until 2019.

Best known for managing the Lotto for Life, Golf, Run and Ride for Life, Brenda raised millions of dollars for medical equipment at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

Famous for her bright smile and infectious laugh, Brenda Rositano was a beloved friend to all her work colleagues.

The Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation would like to sincerely thank the Rositano family for sharing Brenda with all of us. Our community is a better place because of her!

Windsor Plywood Foundation Donates $1 Million Dollars for the New ICU at NRGH!

By News, Thank You!

The Windsor Plywood Foundation has kicked off the 5th Annual Light the Trees with an incredible donation of $1 million dollars towards the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital’s new ICU.

Windsor Plywood Foundation has a long history of giving back to the communities they live and do business in. Just like their website reads “Here to Help since 1969”. With over 60 locations across Western and Central Canada and the Northwestern Unites States Windsor Plywood helps make our communities better. As true leaders, they have supported Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for over a decade, improving healthcare on our Island.

NRGH’s current ICU is one of the oldest in BC. In 2013, an external review said despite the challenges in an outdated facility, NRGH’s ICU ranks near the top nationally for positive patient health outcomes. The Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation is proud to be raising $5 million towards all the state of the art medical equipment in the new ICU.

The new ICU will be located between the existing Emergency Department and the Perinatal/Renal building on the NRGH site. Construction is expected to get underway in early 2021.

“The Windsor Plywood Foundation is delighted to make this contribution to the new ICU at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. The people of Nanaimo and its surrounding regions have been a large part of Windsor’s success over the last 50 years and we are fortunate to be in a position to give back to these communities. We have seen firsthand how Central and North Island has grown, and how the need for a new and updated ICU has become increasingly critical. We look forward to this fantastic new addition to the residents of Central Island.” Says Cathy Brown, Executive Director, Windsor Plywood Foundation

“This is an extraordinary gift for the Hospital Foundation, taking us to $3 million towards the $5 million goal. We still have a lot to fundraise, but the Windsor Plywood Foundation took us over the half way mark and we know our communities will take us the rest of the way. The Windsor Plywood Foundation understands that nothing is more important than the health of our residents. We can’t thank them enough for their leadership with this inspirational donation.” Janice Perrino, CEO, Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation

Changes Coming to NRGH Lobby

By News

The Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation is proud to announce there will be a brand new Code Brew café as part of the lobby renovations at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH). The new café will provide patients, visitors and staff with a wider selection of food and beverage options in an open, modern space.

The Tree of Life donor wall, which is located in the lobby, is being retired after 30 years due to the renovations and to meet hospital health and safety guidelines. A new donor recognition wall was installed in the NRGH lobby last year to replace the Tree of Life. The new donor wall celebrates donors who give $1,000 or more annually and are recognized for 10 years.

“We are grateful for the support we receive from our donors,” said Janice Perrino, CEO of the Hospital Foundation. “Their generosity helps the Hospital Foundation fund essential medical equipment and the donor recognition wall is just one of the ways we thank them.”

The Hospital Foundation is saving all donor plaques from the Tree of Life. Donors are welcome to take them home and can contact the Hospital Foundation at info@nanaimohospitalfoundation.com or 250-755-7690 to arrange.

Lemonade Fundraiser

What better way to raise funds to support children in hospital than with a cool lemonade stand on hot days! River has already raised $80 for the Hospital Foundation and plans to continue selling lemonade throughout the summer.

The Hospital Foundation is a natural fit for her efforts as River wants to be a doctor someday. She has a doctor’s kit and is very interested in healing people’s wounds in a variety of ways including with band aids and ice packs.

River donated some toys at Christmas and we are delighted she has chosen to help children in need once again. Thank you River, you are awesome!

Shields Foundation Donates $100,000 to new ICU

By News, Thank You!

Recognizing the importance of critical care for central Vancouver Island residents, the Shields Foundation has made a $100,000 donation in support of the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation’s $5 million campaign for the new Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH).

Bob Shields, founder of The Shields Foundation, learned of the ICU project through his Nanaimo based company, Coastland Wood Industries. Coastland Wood Industries has been a strong supporter of the Hospital Foundation for well over a decade and their leadership team and employees alike have seen first-hand the impact large projects have on the delivery of healthcare in their community.

“In addition to our initial $100,000 gift, we are also going to put out an employee challenge to our Coastland group with every dollar donated to be matched by the Shields Foundation,” said Bob Shields.

The need for a first class ICU has never been more critical than through the on-going struggles of the COVID-19 pandemic, which, in one way or another, has touched every community and every home. “At the heart of every healthy community is a strong, well equipped hospital and we are very excited to have the opportunity to be a part of this project.” Bob added.

“We are so grateful,” said Janice Krall, Chief Development Officer at the Hospital Foundation. “Support from community leaders such as the Shields Family and the Coastland Wood team allows us to provide our exceptional healthcare professionals with state-of-the-art medical equipment to care for the most critically ill in our region.”

The current ICU at NRGH is 50 years old and serves over 400,000 residents who live north of the Malahat. The total cost to build the new ICU is more than $33 million and is a partnership between the Provincial Government through Island Health, the Nanaimo Regional Hospital District and the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation.

About Coastland Wood Industries

The Shields family has been involved in the marine and forest industry on the coast and, in particular, the Nanaimo area for over 50 years. Coastland Wood Industries has been a part of the Shields Family since 1998 when Bob’s father, Peter Shields, bought into the Company and helped it grow. They have built a strong foundation of community partnerships through their relationships with the Snuneymuxw First Nation, the South End Community and the City of Nanaimo.
