Leslie Smith, of the Nanaimo Lions Club, recently made a welcomed visit to the Palliative Care Unit at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH) to deliver a $1,000 gift to Sue Stone of Palliative Care and Janice Perrino, CEO of the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation. This is the Club’s second gift to Palliative Care this year in an effort help provide new “evolve mattresses” for each bed in the Unit.

The specialized mattresses give patients facing end of life care extra comfort and relief of pressure points while spending extended periods of time in bed. They cost $2,750 each. Ms. Perrino said, “Imagine the comfort now possible to rest even a little bit easier, and focus precious time on loved ones. Thanks to handful of donors who are motivated to help Palliative Care in particular, the evolve mattresses were made possible. This gift makes a fundamental difference to our patients at a most vulnerable time.”
