Critical care teams are there when every second matters, providing specialized care for patients facing serious illness and medical emergencies. With the
support of our community, our healthcare teams have access to enhanced spaces, equipment, and resources that help deliver the highest level of care when it is needed most.
The High Acuity Unit cares for patients who require specialized monitoring and treatment. Donor support funded Sigma Spectrum V8IV Pumps, which provide precise medication and fluid delivery, as well as Dual Chamber Temporary Pacemakers used to stabilize patients experiencing serious heart rhythm complications.
A new Venue Point of Care Ultrasound allows healthcare teams to assess patients and guide procedures without leaving the bedside, helping clinicians make timely decisions when every moment matters. An Olympus Ultra High Definition Monitor further enhances visibility during procedures and assessments.
Donors also funded Omnicell XT Automated Dispensing Cabinets, giving healthcare teams secure and efficient access to medications throughout the unit. These systems support safer medication management and help streamline care delivery in a fast-paced environment.
Additional investments included a Thopaz Digital Chest Drainage System for patients recovering from thoracic surgery and serious chest conditions, along with suction regulators, medical lighting, and specialized transport equipment. Together, these tools help ensure every patient space is equipped to support high-quality critical care.
Even the latest medical technology doesn’t save lives by itself, so NDHF is proud to support healthcare workers in specialized training to increase their proficiency and keep their skillss harp. Funded by donor dollars, Critical Care staff took advanced Geriatric Emergency Nursing courses and specialization in Wound, Ostomy, and Continence, advanced training in managing gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and skin disorders
Donor support funded state-of-the-art medical equipment for cancer surgery and treatment at NRGH including lasers and portable imaging equipment, with funding also directed to the future BC Cancer Centre coming to the NRGH Campus in 2028.
This year, donor support helped expand cancer care capabilities at NRGH with the addition of several advanced surgical, diagnostic, and treatment technologies, including Holmium/Thulium Laser, Neoprobe, Hysteroscopy Set, Trios radiolucent desk top table, Microdibrider, Erbe Electrosurgical Unit, and three Stryker surgical beds. These investments enhance our ability to provide high-quality care in Nanaimo, ensuring patients have local access to modern tools that support diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.

Our Community & Family Health area of care encompasses the Foundation’s support of families from maternity and pediatrics to seniors’ care to our
recruitment of family practitioners. Across Central and North Vancouver Island, donor support is funding programs, equipment, and healthcare education that supports wellbeing throughout the healthcare journey.
Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of illness and death in British Columbia, and as the population of Central Vancouver Island continues to grow and age, the demand for advanced cardiovascular care is increasing significantly. For women in particular, cardiovascular disease is the #1 cause of premature death. We are therefore pleased to announce the approval in the BC Budget 2026 to begin concept planning for increased cardiac services at NRGH. In the meantime, the Foundation is responding to the immediate needs of our care teams, funding advanced training and urgently needed equipment improving care for patients today.
Mental health care touches every part of our community, supporting individuals and families through some of life’s most challenging moments. Thanks to donor support, we are helping create more compassionate, accessible spaces and resources that strengthen care across Central Vancouver Island.
The 2025-2026 fiscal year saw the closure of our largest fundraising campaign ever for a single piece of equipment, with the achievement of our $2.9 million goal for a second SPECT/CT machine for our nuclear imaging department at NRGH, thanks to tremendous donor support. But to Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation, innovation means more than cutting edge technology. It includes systems interventions, advocacy and medical program innovation.

Cancer Care
Our work continues to support local cancer care in Nanaimo, including specialized pathology equipment to examine tissue biopsies for suspected cases of cancer. We’re also helping to move forward the project around a regional cancer center, keeping patients closer to their support networks. This essential area of care is long overdue, and has affected so many families on the island.
Community and Family Health
This area gives focus to children’s health, family doctor recruitment support with the Division of Family Practice, occupational health, palliative care, senior’s care, and education as well as other support for our nurses. We have already had excellent success in this area, with the recruitment of new doctors, and more on the way. Several key partnerships are already in place, and we continue to pursue additional alliances to expand our circle of impact.
Critical Care
Critical Care includes all acute care – emergency, ICU and HAU, and surgery. In June 2023, the new ICU opened with all the required critical equipment funded by
community donors and has been operating at full capacity since then. We are excited to share that the HAU is on track for expected completion by summer 2025, ensuring that our community has access to the highest standard of care.
Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our community, and a transformational gift from the Windsor Plywood Foundation, we have almost achieved our fundraising goal.
Heart and Stroke Care
This area of care includes a new cath lab and equipment, as well as several recent equipment purchases such as echocardiology machine & TEE probe, cardiac ultrasound, a cardiac stress test system, two wireless ECG machines, an echo stretcher, power chairs for our pacemaker clinic, and a Holter scanning system. Costs were also covered for additional staff training on advanced cardiac life support, and heart dysrhythmia.
Innovation
It is only through innovation that we can ensure we maintain the highest standards of care for our community. “We have always done it that way” is not an acceptable answer for our team. We know that to be a driving force in improving healthcare in Central and North Vancouver Island, we must constantly seek new and innovative ways to pursue our vision.
We continue to press for innovation in the areas of advocacy, laboratory services, medical imaging, medical professional education, and pharmacy, among others.
And once again, mutually beneficial partnerships grounded in the desire to improve healthcare outcomes are key to the Foundation having an impact well beyond our traditional resources.
Mental Health
We continue to seek out ways to improve and expand medical detox, VI scan (Vancouver Island Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect program), and youth wellness outreach. These essential areas are interwoven with other areas of care, and we seek ways to innovate and create greater impact.
