Thank you to all our donors who made the purchase and installation of a washer and dryer in the NICU possible. Before the installation, baby clothes had to be taken to another department to be washed. Baby clothes are very delicate so the new W/D will help keep them in better condition and valuable time will be saved by being able to do the laundry right in the department.
Jesse’s Gift Foundation donated $7,330 which was raised through a raffle of WestJet tickets to purchase the appliances and other project costs were covered by the generosity of many other donors. Thank you to the NRGH Facilities Maintenance & Operations staff for installing the washer and dryer!

The students and families of Randerson Ridge School donated a whopping 440 teddy bears! Isabella, a student at Randerson, presented the idea to her school after she and her sisters donated bears to the Foundation. Her Teddy Bear Drive was very well received with PetSmart in Duncan being the biggest donor! Children receiving medical care at NRGH and VI SCAN will get much comfort from these cuddly toys.

Thank you to the Parksville Quilters Guild for yet another generous and colourful donation of quilts and other items! These comfort items make a big difference for our littlest of patients. They will be given to babies and young children who are receiving care in the NICU at NRGH and VI SCAN (Vancouver Island Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect Program).

The Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation supports leading edge care by funding professional development for medical staff. Whether it is a broader toolkit to assist patients in psychiatric or palliative care or advancements in post-surgical care, the Hospital Foundation is committed to funding relevant, transferable and innovative learning to support better health outcomes for patients.
With constant advancements in healthcare knowledge and techniques, continuing education is essential in all areas of care. For example, emergency nursing care of a child with an acute illness or injury requires special knowledge and skills. Wanting to be able to deliver the best care possible to young patients, RNs at NRGH recently took an Emergency Nursing Paediatric Course (ENPC). The ENPC, an intensive two-day course with an expert instructor, provides the core-level paediatric knowledge and psychomotor skills (skills where movement and thinking are combined) needed to care for paediatric patients in the emergency setting. And the staff appreciate the impact of ongoing learning including the greater depth and breadth of knowledge that improves the care they can provide to patients on a daily basis.
“ENPC provides an opportunity to practice hands on skills and also offers valuable information and education specific to caring for Paediatric patients and their families. This course and the instructors offered great examples and suggestions that I will be able to implement in my nursing practice and share with other Paediatric team members. Thank you to Island Aggregates and their employees for their generous $1,250 donation for cardiac care expansion at NRGH and Oceanside Health Centre in Parksville! Funds were raised through their staff Christmas party.
Thank you to Jesse’s Gift Foundation for their $7,330 donation! The funds were raised through a raffle for WestJet tickets and will be used to purchase a washer and dryer for the NICU at NRGH. Having their own W/D in their department is much more convenient and allows the paediatric staff to use detergents that are gentle on baby clothing.
