Music Heals Brings Connection and Joy to Dufferin Place

A familiar song, a shared rhythm, a moment of connection. Thanks to the Music Heals Foundation, more residents at Dufferin Place are experiencing the comfort and joy of music therapy.

In 2026, Music Heals provided matching funds that supported music therapy each week at the Nanaimo long-term care home. This support expanded individual and small group sessions, bringing music directly to residents who may otherwise have difficulty participating.

From January 6 to September 15, this funding made 95 additional music therapy sessions possible, reaching approximately 174 participants.

Bringing Music to Residents

Previously, music therapy sessions primarily took place in Dufferin Place’s activity area. The additional funding allowed Music Therapist, Aisling Ryan-Aylward, to spend more time with residents in their rooms, including those with limited mobility, advanced dementia or experiences of social isolation.

Through singing, playing instruments and sharing memories, residents have opportunities to express themselves and connect with others. Staff have even noticed residents who initially showed little interest joining in when the therapist visited a roommate, then looking forward to the next session.

“The addition of more 1:1 and small group music therapy sessions have made such a difference for socially isolated residents!” shares Danica Zaric, Activity Coordinator at Dufferin Place.

Finding Connection Through Rhythm

For Dufferin Place resident Karen Butchart, music therapy has become a highlight of her week.

Following a stroke, Karen was encouraged to learn a new instrument to support her recovery. At Dufferin Place, she found the drum.

“I love the singing and the songstress. Let’s carry on!” says Karen.

Since joining group sessions in May, Karen has become an enthusiastic participant, requesting her favourite drum each week. Aisling describes how playing gives Karen an engaging way to work on coordination and motor control while expressing her emotions.

Karen also shares her humour, determination and love of familiar songs with fellow residents.

Thank You, Music Heals Foundation!

The impact of this support is felt by residents, their families and the staff who care for them. Each visit creates space for companionship, expression and moments of joy.

As one resident shared, “It brings happiness, it can make the day just right for you.”

The Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation is grateful to the Music Heals Foundation for helping make these experiences possible. Thank you for being our partner-in-care and supporting musical connection for residents of Dufferin Place.
