Volunteer Spotlight: Kathy Berg

If you have ever crossed paths with Kathy Berg at an event, chances are you have already experienced her warmth, energy, and genuine love for community.
Kathy is one of those people who naturally brings people together. Whether she is helping at an event, chatting with guests, or lending a hand behind the scenes, she shows up with a positive attitude and a willingness to jump in wherever she is needed. For her, volunteering with NDHF is all about connection and contributing to something bigger than herself.
Her passion for supporting healthcare comes from seeing just how important strong, accessible care is for our growing region. It is what fuels her commitment and keeps her coming back, ready to help however she can.
When asked what makes a great volunteer shift, Kathy keeps it simple: good conversations, meeting new people, and sharing the impact of the Foundation’s work. She loves being part of those moments where people begin to understand how their support directly contributes to better care in our region.
One of her favourite memories is supporting at the Qualicum Beach Social last summer. The room was full of energy, generosity, and a shared sense of purpose. It was a reminder that while Nanaimo Regional General Hospital may be at the centre, the impact of that care reaches communities across the Central and North Vancouver Island.
Kathy’s secret to staying motivated? Keeping it fun. Her positive outlook is contagious, and it is a big part of what makes her such a valued member of the volunteer community.
When she is not volunteering, you will likely find Kathy outdoors making the most of Vancouver Island life, trail running, hiking, biking, or simply soaking up some sunshine with family and friends.
Her advice for anyone thinking about volunteering is refreshingly honest: choose something you care about. When you are passionate about the cause, showing up does not feel like a chore, it feels like something you want to do.
For Kathy, volunteering has not only been a way to give back, but also a way to build meaningful friendships and be part of a community that is working toward something truly important.
And if you ever need a reminder that doing good can also be a lot of fun, Kathy is your person.
