Healthcare Spotlight: Natascha eggen, Team Lead – Operating Room
Natascha eggen
In the Operating Room at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, every detail matters. Every moment counts. And behind it all is a team working seamlessly together to keep patients safe.

For Natascha Eggen, that level of care comes naturally. Often starting her day with a Code Brew London Fog in hand, she steps into a fast-paced environment where no two days look the same, but the goal is always clear: safe, high-quality care for every patient.
A registered nurse since 2001, Natascha joined the operating room at NRGH in 2013 and became a team lead in 2018. Today, she helps guide the rhythm of the OR, balancing coordination, clinical expertise, and leadership to keep everything running smoothly.
Natascha holds a dynamic role within healthcare. One moment she is organizing surgical slates or sourcing specialized equipment, the next she is stepping into a procedure to support as a circulating or scrub nurse. She also leads within the department through mentorship, helping new team members find their footing while supporting experienced colleagues across Urology, Ear Nose and Throat, and the Pain Clinic.
What many people do not see is how much happens before a patient even enters the operating room. Behind the scenes, Natascha and her team are constantly preparing, checking, and anticipating what is needed to ensure each procedure runs safely. It is a level of focus and teamwork that makes all the difference.
“What many people don’t see is that our focus on patient safety comes naturally. It’s in our nature to be attentive, prepared, and supportive – always thinking a step ahead to ensure patients feel safe and cared for throughout their surgical journey.” – Natascha
In the OR, patient safety is not just a priority, it is a shared mindset. From detailed surgical checklists to open communication and mutual support, every team member plays a role in creating a safe and consistent environment for patients. Even the smallest details are treated with care and intention.
And while the work is serious, the team culture is just as strong. You will often find the group coming together for potlucks or looking ahead to their annual summer camping trip, a tradition now five years running. It is these moments that strengthen the trust and connection that carry into the operating room each day.
For Natascha, some of the most meaningful moments are not always the loudest ones. They are found in the quiet, steady work. Anticipating what the team needs. Stepping in at just the right time. Creating a calm, prepared environment so patients can feel at ease.
Through her leadership, attention to detail, and commitment to her team, it is clear that being part of a healthcare team is simply in Natascha’s nature.
