BC’s first Senior Friendly Emergency Unit
Did you know we have the busiest ER on all of Vancouver Island?
And 35% of all daily visits are seniors 65 and over.
Right now, our emergency department is overcrowded, and patients often wait long hours just to be assessed. For elderly patients who are already frail, already vulnerable, this is more than frustrating. It can be dangerous.
That’s why this season, we are asking you to join us to raise $1.2 million to build and equip a specialized emergency space where seniors can receive care that’s calm, safe, and dignified.
Together, we can ensure no senior has to receive hospital care in a hallway.
Why It Matters
NRGH is the busiest ER on Vancouver Island with an aging population. Vulnerable patients wait hours, or even days, for a bed. With your support, we can change that.
The Senior Friendly Emergency Unit will feature equipment designed for seniors, quieter spaces, and staff trained in geriatrics, so recovery is safer and faster.
A calm, senior-friendly space reduces stress, confusion, and risk of falls, leading to better recovery.

Beds with Pressure Reducing Mattresses

Please help us buy special beds with pressure-reducing mattresses that go low enough for seniors who are smaller or have mobility issues. When people need to be admitted into in-patient care, they may be waiting for days before they are transferred. These beds will allow our elderly patients to have a comfortable place to rest and be cared for while they wait for a diagnosis.
Comfort Carts

Comfort carts include puzzles, games to help reduce stress and include activities that our dementia patients find calming and mentally stimulating. It can be difficult for our seniors waiting in the emergency unit, and these carts keep patients busy with an enjoyable activity to reduce their stress.
Safe Reclining Chairs

Will you help us purchase chairs that are designed with seniors in mind? These comfortable reclining chairs have six positions which include laying flat or bringing a patient to standing. They even include an alarm to alert medical staff if the patient leaves their chair for any reason. With these chairs our senior patients can sit and eat their meals instead of staying all day in bed. These chairs will provide them with dignity, safety and comfort.
