Making Waves in Healthcare: Let Her Run Paddles Forward for Breast Health

What started as a group of women coming together on the water has grown into something much bigger. Built on community, connection, and a shared commitment to making a difference, the Let Her Run Dragon Boat Team have created a meaningful impact.

Made up of 26 dedicated members, the team recently donated $5,000 to NDHF in support of mammography equipment at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH).

Since forming in 2016, their fundraising efforts have been driven by a cause that touches every member. Through personal experiences or those of loved ones, each has been affected by breast cancer. Today, the team proudly includes a breast cancer survivor.

Their approach to fundraising is simple, creative, and rooted in teamwork.

From hot dog and chocolate sales to 50/50 draws at Night Owl games, every effort contributes to their growing impact. Team members also give back by contributing donations and redirecting honorariums earned from teaching international students how to paddle.

In one memorable example, two teammates volunteered to bartend at a member’s wedding, resulting in a $500 donation to their cause instead of personal payment.

“We just get creative with it,” they shared. “Small movements really do make a big impact.”

After reaching their initial $5,000 goal, the team kept going, setting new goals and continuing their efforts.

On March 10, they gathered at NRGH to present their donation in person. During their visit, they received an insider view the mammography room and connected with members of the imaging team, seeing firsthand at how their donation will support patient care.

Their team motto, “No drama, have fun and be kind,” reflects the supportive and generous culture they have built both on and off the water.

This donation will support cancer equipment at NRGH, helping improve early detection and outcomes for patients across the region.

It is a powerful reminder that when people come together with purpose, meaningful change follows.

From all of us at NDHF, thank you to Let Her Run Dragon Boat Team for turning teamwork into something that benefits the entire community.
