Help Us Fund 22 New Fetal Monitors for Safer Births at NRGH

Every Baby Deserves a Safe Start.

With more than 1,250 babies born at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital each year, we urgently need to replace our fetal monitoring equipment. Your support will help us purchase 22 Philips Avalon FM30 Fetal Monitors—ensuring safe, continuous care for every mother and baby.

Why It Matters

Every baby deserves to be safely monitored from the first moment.

Nanaimo Regional General Hospital is the only facility on Central and North Vancouver Island that supports preterm deliveries earlier than 36 weeks. That means our Maternity Unit not only serves our local community, but also provides essential care for high-risk pregnancies from across the Island and Province.

The current fetal monitors in use have exceeded their intended lifespan—originally designed for ten years, most have been in operation for over 17 years. While they have served our hospital well, it’s time to transition to newer, more advanced technology.

We’re raising $530,000 to purchase 22 new Philips Avalon FM30 Fetal Monitors that will:

  • Enable wireless, continuous monitoring, even as mothers move around the unit or labour in water.
  • Use Smart Pulse technology to distinguish between fetal and maternal heartbeats—vital for twins or triplets.
  • Seamlessly integrate with the nurse call system and hospital’s electronic health records, so even offsite specialists can review remotely.
  • Ensure flexibility and mobility, with monitors that can move between rooms as needed.
