Sarah au-yeung

Behind every safe and effective treatment plan is someone carefully reviewing the details, asking the right questions, and advocating for the best possible outcome. We are excited to highlight Sarah Au-Yeung, and it feels like perfect timing as we share her story during Pharmacy Appreciation Month.

Sarah has been a Clinical Pharmacist at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital since June 2015. For more than 10 years, she has worked alongside physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure medications are safe, effective, and tailored to each patient’s needs.

As a medication therapy expert, Sarah helps resolve drug interactions, adjusts doses based on kidney function and other clinical factors, monitors for side effects, optimizes antimicrobial therapy, and supports patients facing adherence or cost concerns. Sometimes, her impact is immediate. She recalls identifying a patient whose kidney function declined significantly overnight, requiring urgent medication adjustments to prevent harmful side effects. It is this careful attention that helps protect patients every single day.

“We make a difference by optimizing patients’ drug therapies, whether it is resolving drug interactions, adjusting medications based on organ function, monitoring for side effects, optimizing antimicrobial therapy, or finding solutions to adherence and cost concerns.”

Outside of the hospital, Sarah brings just as much passion to her community. She is the President of the Nanaimo Ballroom Dance Society and competes in the annual Island Fantasy Ball, with many of her pharmacy colleagues attending to cheer her on. When she is not dancing, you can likely find her exploring local restaurants as a food blogger under Nanaimo Noms on Instagram and Facebook.

Her go to Code Brew order is a hot chocolate with whipped cream, she loves wearing blue scrubs, and she never misses Reuben day or perogies in the cafeteria.

Because of community support, professionals like Sarah have the tools and resources they need to safeguard patients across our region. Her work is a quiet but essential part of delivering high quality care close to home.
