Positive Update: Concept Planning Begins for NRGH Expansion
I’m pleased to share that the Province has approved the start of concept planning for expansion at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH), as confirmed in BC Budget 2026 and by Island Health. This is a big deal as we are the only healthcare project to get approval for proceeding with initial planning in the Province. I believe this is happening because our community leadership is standing shoulder to shoulder, our Foundation, Island Health, the City of Nanaimo, our MLA’s (Malcolmson, Anderson and Higgins), Snuneymuxw First Nation, the Medical Staff Association, The Fair Care Alliance, and the Nanaimo Regional Hospital District who offered to foot the bill for the concept planning.
This important first step allows for a detailed assessment of community needs and potential options, which may include a new patient tower and cardiac catheterization (cath) lab to better serve Central Vancouver Island’s growing population.
This graphic illustrates the Provincial capital approval process. This approval represents the initial planning stage only. Construction funding has not yet been committed. Following completion of the concept plan (estimated up to 18 months), the project would require a detailed business plan and Treasury Board approval before funding could be secured.

Your continued support plays a vital role in helping move this project forward. We will keep you informed as progress continues.
Thank you for your ongoing commitment to strengthening local healthcare.
