Seeing beyond to Save lives: $2.9 Million Raised for Vital Diagnostic Medical Imaging
NANAIMO, BC – July 14, 2025 – NDHF Completes Largest Equipment Campaign in Record 8 Month Timeframe
The Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation is thrilled to announce the successful completion of its largest-ever fundraising campaign for a single piece of equipment: a second SPECT/CT scanner for Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH).
In just eight months, $2.9 million was raised to bring this advanced diagnostic technology to the Central and North Island—thanks to the incredible generosity of over 1,400 donors.
“This campaign showed the best of our community,” says Barney Ellis-Perry, Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation CEO. “Every donation, every event that was attended, every Smile Cookie purchased, and campaign social media post shared helped make this milestone possible.

The SPECT/CT scanner is a state-of-the-art piece of diagnostic imaging equipment used to detect cancer, heart disease, and other life-threatening conditions. It allows clinicians to see beyond what conventional imaging can detect—merging 3D functional imaging with anatomical precision for earlier, faster, and more accurate diagnoses. For patients, this can mean faster treatment, less travel, and better outcomes.
“The contributions that you make to the NDHF are very much appreciated and very much needed,” adds Dr Rob Johnson. Thanks to this community, we are one step closer to a future where critical diagnoses don’t come with delays, stress, or long travel.
This second machine will dramatically reduce wait times, decrease the need for patients to travel out of region, and improve care for thousands across the Island.
The $2.9 million funding was a collaborative effort including major individual gifts, donations of securities, bequests, and gifts made in memory of loved ones.
Other campaign highlights aiding reaching the quick finish target were:
• $100,000 raised by the Tom Harris Community Classic golf tournament, taking place in late June officially marking the reach to the finish line
• $47,507 raised by the 2025 Tim Hortons Smile Cookie week
• $15,000 raised by Save-On-Foods
• $10,000 from the 2025 International Women’s Day events
• Over $115,000 raised inspired by Carly Carey, including a personal online campaign, #FitCheckforCancer, and direct mail appeal
• Contributions from over 1,000 individual donors, service clubs, corporate partners and third-party events
Construction is expected to begin later this year.
