Meet the Welly Waveriders

“We paddle for fun, for fitness, and to provide a better future for our community. That’s just the Welly way.”

Originally formed by a group of teachers from Wellington Secondary School, the Welly’s, as they’re affectionately known, have grown into a dynamic and diverse team of paddlers. Some still work in education, others come from all walks of life, but what unites them is a love for the water and their deep commitment to giving back to their community.

Why It’s in Their Nature, to Paddle, and to Give

The Welly Waveriders train hard, practicing twice a week from April to July, but their impact stretches well beyond the boat. From hosting beer and burger fundraisers to volunteering at local events like the Vancouver Island Exhibition (VIEX), the team donates proceeds to the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation, helping improve care for everyone in the community they call home.

Over the years, the Wellys have supported the Foundation in a variety of grassroots ways, including participating in the annual Dragon Boat festival, and other Foundation supporting events. As team captain Leona shares, “We’re always open to new opportunities to give back to the community we train on it’s just part of who we are.”

The team also makes time to connect off the water, meeting for monthly dinners at local restaurants and celebrating the kind of lasting friendships that come from paddling in sync, through waves, wind, and life’s challenges.

Community, Connection, and a Cause

For many members, dragon boating is about more than competition — it’s about connection. Several paddlers were introduced to the sport by friends and stayed for the camaraderie, wellness, and sense of purpose. “Supporting where we live helps make our community stronger,” says one member. “Giving to the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation just makes sense – it’s local, it’s needed, and it’s something we all benefit from.”

The Wellys embody the “It’s In My Nature” spirit by showing up year after year. Not just on the water, but in service to their neighbours, their healthcare system, and each other.

Grassroots Giving

With no major sponsors and a completely volunteer-run team, the Welly Waveriders fundraise in true grassroots fashion. Every dollar raised through their efforts is a collective labour of love. And they’re not slowing down. The team plans to continue supporting the Foundation and remains open to new philanthropic opportunities that reflect their values.

From their early days led by founder Noreen Martin to their current roster of paddlers steered by team leader Ilona, the Wellys continue to grow in heart and in impact.
