Floor 3: The New Trauma Care Unit

As of early 2024, Floor 3 has transformed into the new Trauma Inpatient Unit at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH). This change allows us to admit and care for trauma patients who would have previously been sent to Victoria. Our unit has focused on training surgical nurses to become skilled in the new practice of trauma care. We have also assembled a team of trauma physicians who provide around-the-clock, comprehensive care in the unit. This dedicated trauma team enables us to keep patients closer to their home communities while maintaining a high standard of care that they would normally need to travel for.
The Trauma service at NRGH is currently conducting a unique trial with a specialized chest tube system called Thopaz. This innovative system helps patients heal and go home up to two days earlier than before. The Thopaz is a portable suction system designed for patients with fractured ribs, which can lead to complications like hemothorax or pneumothorax—conditions that require specific treatment. Fractured ribs may result from car accidents, falls, or other injuries to the chest.
We are grateful for the opportunity to provide this level of care and for the advanced technology that improves our community’s health services!
