How We Show Up, How We Share, and How We Love

“The beautiful thing about life is that we get to choose how we live it.” – Carly Carey

A Personal Mission to Improve Healthcare

Fundraising for Imaging to diagnosis Cancer

Carly’s connection to healthcare in Nanaimo runs deep. She has experienced firsthand how access to medical resources can shape a patient’s journey.

“When I was first diagnosed with lymphoma at 18, everything happened quickly—tests, diagnosis, treatment. But today, it’s different. The healthcare system is stretched.”

The SPECT/CT machine will help doctors “see beyond” conventional imaging, giving patients in Nanaimo access to state-of-the-art diagnostic technology without needing to travel elsewhere.

Why We Need a SPECT/CT Machine:

  • 75% of the scans done by SPECT/CT are to identify cancer and cardiac issues.
  • This advanced imaging technology allows doctors to see beyond traditional scans, providing faster, more accurate diagnoses for cancer, heart disease, and other serious conditions.
  • Right now, patients in Nanaimo face delays or have to travel out of town for critical imaging.
  • This machine will change that—keeping advanced diagnostic on Central Vancouver Island.

Carly’s Story: Choosing Hope and Giving Back

Carly Carey is a wife, mother, business leader, and two-time cancer warrior. Diagnosed with cancer again after 25 years in remission, she now embarks on a journey of treatment, recovery, and hope.

“I don’t know if it’s so much strength as it is—what other option do I have? I am literally fighting for my life, and I have two choices. I can choose to wake up every day and try and feel as good as possible… or I can choose to get angry and sad and depressed. And I don’t think that’s going to do my body or my healing any good whatsoever. So, I don’t actually even feel like it’s a choice. It’s survival mode.”

Instead of retreating inward, Carly has chosen to give back, using her story to raise awareness and support for Nanaimo Regional General Hospital’s need for a second SPECT/CT machine, a critical piece of imaging equipment that can help detect cancer earlier and provide more accurate diagnoses.
