A Time for Reflection and Action

Message from Barney Ellis-Perry, CEO

The famous Chinese proverb, “May you live in interesting times,” has never felt more relevant than it does today. The economic and political shifts happening south of the border are sending ripples across the globe, including right here on Vancouver Island. At a recent meeting of our Board, we discussed the potential impact of these changes—particularly the implications of tariffs—on our local, provincial, and national economy, and how they might affect philanthropy.
I approached that conversation with a heavy heart. Having lived in the United States for many years, I’ve felt deeply connected to its people and communities. However, I left our Board meeting feeling unexpectedly inspired. The discussion reinforced a powerful realization: moments of uncertainty can also be moments of unity. This shift is prompting many Canadians, myself included, to reflect on our shared values and the importance of investing in our own communities.
For those of you who may be feeling the same way, I offer this: supporting the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation is not just an investment in healthcare — it is an investment in the fundamental Canadian value of equal access to care. As we know, healthcare on Central Vancouver Island does not receive the same level of funding and resources as South Island or the mainland. And yet, ensuring high-quality healthcare for all is something that defines us as Canadians. That belief fuels my passion, and I hope it sparks something in you as well.
Now, more than ever, we have the opportunity to strengthen our community and reaffirm what we stand for. Thank you for being part of this journey with us.
Warmly,
Barney Ellis-Perry
CEO, Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation
